L'integrale registrato di Stefano Molardi della musica per organo di Bach su Brilliant Classics ha ottenuto pareri d'oro dal presidente specializzato. Come nei quattro volumi di quel ciclo, Molardi ha avuto cura di scegliere gli strumenti adatti al repertorio, suonando due magnifici strumenti di Gottfried Silbermann (l'organaro prediletto di Bach) per registrare l'intera musica per organo – il primo album del genere a farlo – di Johann Kuhnau.
Kuhnau prosperò come musicista di chiesa in Germania circa una generazione prima di J.S. Bach. Fu nominato kantor della Thomaskirche nel 1701, alla morte di Johann Schelle, il precedente titolare. Quando Kuhnau morì nel 1722, fu J.S. Bach che ha assunto la sua posizione dopo un lungo processo di selezione. Kuhnau ha svolto un ruolo fondamentale nell'evoluzione della musica nella Germania centrale. Ciò era in parte dovuto alla bellezza e alla raffinatezza delle sue melodie, alla nitidezza della sua armonia, al suo sapiente uso della dissonanza e all'eleganza corelliana delle sue composizioni.
Tuttavia la qualità duratura della musica di Kuhnau deriva anche dalla sua capacità di infondere nella sua musica i frutti del suo considerevole apprendimento in teologia e retorica. Ciò è particolarmente evidente nelle Sonate Bibliche, che narrano scene dell'Antico Testamento - Davide che uccide Golia e la vittoria di Gedeone si prestano evidentemente a presentazioni drammatiche, ma ci sono anche storie potenzialmente più intricate e astratte: Giacobbe ed Esaù, tra cui la preghiera di Ezechia. Pubblicate nel 1700, le Sonate Bibliche furono il culmine della produzione compositiva di Kuhnau, riscuotendo un notevole successo commerciale, e meritano oggi un pubblico più vasto.
Poi ci sono sette sonate di dimensioni e carattere più convenzionali. Questi sono stati pubblicati separatamente dalla Sonata in si bemolle, un'opera di portata e invenzione notevolmente maggiori. Come ha notato lo stesso Kuhnau sul manoscritto, questa è forse la prima volta che la descrizione del genere è stata applicata a un'opera per tastiera solista. Infine, ci sono i preludi e le fughe nei due volumi di Kuhnau (1689 e 1692) di Neuer Clavier Übung, che in alcuni punti gettano luce sull'appropriazione del genere da parte di Bach.
Questo cofanetto di 3CD presenta la prima registrazione completa delle opere per organo di Kuhnau! Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722) ricoprì diversi importanti incarichi in Germania, prima di stabilirsi a Lipsia, dove fu per molti anni cantore della Thomaskirche, fino alla sua morte nel 1722, quando subentrò Bach (un suo amico personale).
La musica di Kuhnau è altamente innovativa: melodie raffinate e belle, uso sapiente delle dissonanze e un'eleganza corelliana. Introdusse gli “affetti” di Monteverdi nelle sue opere per organo, creando la prima “musica a programma” strumentale. Le sue "Sonate bibliche" sono basate su scene dell'Antico Testamento, rappresentate con frasi espressive ed eloquenti ed effetti strumentali.
Stefano Molardi è uno dei maggiori organisti italiani, specializzato in musica barocca. Le sue numerose registrazioni (tra cui un ciclo completo di Bach molto apprezzato su Brilliant Classics) hanno riscosso grande successo dalla stampa internazionale.
Suonato su un magnifico organo Silbermann storico del 1714 del duomo di Freiberg, le cui specifiche complete sono incluse nell'ampio libretto.
